25G SFP28 BiDi: Doubling Fiber Capacity for 5G NR Networks
Editor:    Date: 3/23/2026

Introduction: Solving the Fiber Exhaustion Crisis

As 5G Standalone (SA) networks reach peak deployment in 2026, mobile operators are facing a physical crisis: they are running out of fiber. The "Front-haul"¡ªthe connection between the Baseband Unit (BBU) and the Remote Radio Unit (RRU) atop the tower¡ªtypically requires two fibers per link. In high-density urban 5G sites, those fiber ducts are full.

The 25G SFP28 BiDi (Bidirectional) transceiver is the "magic bullet" for this problem. By allowing data to travel in both directions over a single strand of fiber, it instantly doubles the capacity of existing fiber infrastructure.

How BiDi Works: Wavelength Division in Action

Traditional SFP28 modules use two fibers: one to "talk" and one to "listen." A BiDi module uses a BOSA (Bidirectional Optical Sub-Assembly) that integrates a diplexer.

  • The A-Side (Upstream): Transmits at 1270nm and receives at 1330nm.

  • The B-Side (Downstream): Transmits at 1330nm and receives at 1270nm.

By using these offset wavelengths, the signals never "crash" into each other, even though they are sharing the same glass core. This technology is compliant with eCPRI (enhanced Common Public Radio Interface) standards, making it the perfect fit for 5G architectures.

Industrial Grade: Built for the 5G "Edge"

Unlike data center modules that sit in climate-controlled rooms, 5G optics live in "gray boxes" on top of telephone poles or in street cabinets. They are subject to freezing winters and blistering summers.

Our 25G BiDi SFPs are I-Temp (Industrial Temperature) rated. They are tested to operate from -40¡ãC to +85¡ãC.

  • Hardened Lasers: We use DFB (Distributed Feedback) lasers designed for high-stability performance without the need for active cooling.

  • EMI Shielding: Enhanced shielding to prevent interference from the high-power radio frequencies found at the top of 5G towers.

The Business Case for BiDi

For a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at a telecom, the BiDi choice is purely financial:

  1. CAPEX Savings: Laying new fiber in a city can cost $50,000+ per mile. Replacing standard SFPs with BiDi modules costs a few hundred dollars.

  2. Speed to Market: You can upgrade a cell site to 25G speeds in hours using existing fiber, rather than waiting months for a construction permit to dig new trenches.

  3. Low Latency: 5G applications like autonomous driving and AR/VR require sub-10ms latency. Our BiDi modules provide the direct, low-latency path required for URLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications).

Deployment Tips: Don't Forget the Pairs

The most common mistake in BiDi deployment is ordering the same part number for both ends of the link. Remember: BiDi modules must be used in pairs. You need one 1270nm-TX/1330nm-RX module on the switch side and one 1330nm-TX/1270nm-RX module on the radio side.

Pro-Tip: Color-coded pull-tabs (e.g., Purple for A-side, Blue for B-side) are essential for field technicians to ensure they are installing the correct "mate" at each end of the fiber link.

Summary: The Future of the 5G Edge

The 25G SFP28 BiDi is the unsung hero of the 5G revolution. It provides the speed, environmental resilience, and fiber efficiency required to keep our world connected.
